The Word’s Out: ABC Confirms Young People are the Majority

The ABC just confirmed what we’ve known all along: young people are the majority. For the first time ever, Gen Z and Millennials will outnumber Baby Boomers in every state and territory at the next federal election. By May 2025, we’ll make up 50% of voters—and the political establishment is scrambling to keep up.

This isn’t just a statistic—it’s a seismic shift in Australian politics. For decades, policies have been designed around the perceived needs of older generations. But now, the power is in our hands. The question is: how will we use it?

Why This Matters

Young people are on the frontline of the housing, climate, and cost-of-living crises. We’re the ones struggling to afford rent, worrying about the future of our planet, and feeling the pinch of rising living costs. The status quo isn’t working for us, and elections are our chance to demand change.

But here’s the thing: having the numbers isn’t enough. To truly transform our democracy, we need to get organised. That’s where the Tomorrow Movement comes in.

What’s at Stake

The 2025 Federal Election isn’t just about casting votes—it’s about reshaping who holds power in our democracy. For too long, big business has captured our political system, blocking the changes we desperately need. They’ve told us we have to choose between good jobs or climate action, between healthcare or housing. But we know better.

This election is our moment to unite across these manufactured divides and fight for a future that works for everyone. Together, we can win:

  • Good jobs in climate-safe industries.
  • Great public services that care for those who need it most.
  • A safe climate for all.

The Power of the Youth Vote

The ABC article highlights what we’ve been saying all along: young people are a political force to be reckoned with. In key marginal seats, young voters make up nearly 30% of the electorate. That’s more than enough to swing the outcome of the election.

But here’s the catch: young people are also the most sceptical about political advertising and traditional media. We consume information differently—through social media, podcasts, and streaming services—and we’re not easily swayed by empty promises.

That’s why we need to build a movement that speaks our language, addresses our concerns, and empowers us to take action.

What We’re Doing About It

At the Tomorrow Movement, we’re organising young people across the country to fight for a tomorrow that works for everyone, not just big business. Through campaigns, actions, and community-building, we’re showing what happens when young people unite our power.

This election, we’re:

  • Creating media-genic actions to make big solutions politically popular and hold politicians accountable.
  • Having thousands of conversations with young people to amplify our vision for a better future.
  • Telling powerful stories based on our lived experiences of the housing, climate, and cost-of-living crises.
