Young people outraged at the 2024 Federal Budget

“This 2024 federal budget was clearly put together by an older generation, with no plan for our future. It won’t reform many of the structural issues; housing, cost of living and more, that are hurting young people. said Jack Simmons, Organiser at Tomorrow Movement.

“Young people can’t pay their rent, are struggling in casual under-paid jobs and looking ahead to a future of climate crisis. This government has delivered a truly irresponsible budget that will leave young people behind. The stage 3 tax cuts will do nothing to help us afford homes or find stable jobs.” Jas, Organiser at Tomorrow Movement

“As a young student, I’ll need to take a pay cut to work in my field of study compared to my current casual jobs. Paid placements are a great start but we need liveable wages. Why should young people study or work in vital industries when they aren’t paid enough to afford to rent, let alone buy homes?” Kira, Melbourne, 21, university student.

“Young people know we need to radically change the way our economy works. As a renewable engineering student, looking ahead to my future I am worried about who is going to do the work to transform our grid. I want to see this government create millions of good, well paid jobs – starting with accessible education – that help set up young Australians for a bright future.” – Ben, ACT, 17, university student

“The government has to make an actual plan for our future and not leave it to private companies and the market. The intergenerational inequality is so clear – young people now are worse off. We are the generation who will collectively feel the worst impacts of the cost of living, climate and housing crises. Instead of acting, they’re ignoring us.” Jack, Wollongong, Organiser at Tomorrow Movement.
