TEAR DOWN FLEMINGTON FLOOD WALL

On the final day of the Spring carnival races , Melbourne residents are rallied at Footscray Park to protest the Flemington Flood Wall- which protected the Flemington Racecourse from flooding while hundreds of homes were submerged.

The community will be coming together to demand that the government prioritises protection for all communities and our houses in the climate crisis, not just the interests of the wealthy.

Rally organisers from the Tomorrow Movement are calling for protection and support when climate disasters happen including immediate flood relief and investment in future flood prevention measures. They are also demanding a long term plan to protect our communities in times of crisis- a Climate Jobs Guarantee which would fund jobs in disaster management and vital support services.

Rally organiser and Footscray resident Luca C says:

“The Flemington Flood wall represents how our government has prioritised the interests of big business instead of protecting our communities and our homes in climate disasters. While the interests of the wealthy were protected by the flood wall, people’s homes were flooded.

“The community is coming together to demand better protections from future flooding and calling for immediate flood relief and prevention. We deserve a long-term climate plan to protect our communities in times of crisis. That’s why we’re also campaigning for a climate jobs guarantee, which would create thousands of good jobs in disaster management, providing secure housing and mitigating the worst impacts of the climate crisis.”
