Our movement is standing strong for a recovery that works for all of us.
While the government plans to cut income support for the people hit hardest by this pandemic and give millions of dollars to giant gas and coal companies, our movement drew a line in the sand. We showed that we will stand up and fight for a recovery that works for all of us.
Young people across the country protested outside Government Minister’s offices demanding the Morrison Government implement a Climate Jobs Guarantee as part of the COVID-19 recovery.
“Coronavirus has put a sledgehammer through our futures. Many of us will never be able to own a home, start a family or establish a secure life because of the long-term effects of this recession,” said Desiree Cai, Lead organiser for Tomorrow Movement.
“Nearly half the jobs that have disappeared this year belonged to 15 to 24-year-olds. We haven’t seen any new thinking or ideas from the Morrison Government on direct job creation.
“We can’t make plans for our future. Young people face insecure work, with low wages and unstable hours. Many of us are saddled with debt for our education. The jobs that were once guaranteed to help pay off those study debts no longer exist.
“We are queuing outside Scott Morrison’s office to hand in our resumes and demand good jobs. Scott Morrison might think he doesn’t have to worry about us because young people won’t vote for him. We are going to inherit this mess, so we deserve solutions,” said Desiree Cai.
“Millions of young people face cuts to their income support payments next week. We want Scott Morrison to put the interests of future generations above big business. We want a Climate Jobs Guarantee to deliver jobs for young people and start to solve the climate crisis,” said the Tomorrow Movement’s Jasmine Walker, who will be leading an action in Melbourne.
“Young people around the country are protesting today because we will be the hardest hit by the long-term impacts of this recession. We are taking action to demand the Morrison Government create direct jobs, good jobs and a living income for all,” said Jasmine Walker.
Half measures won’t cut it. The unemployment crisis is here. The climate crisis is here. We need to fight for transformational solutions that can deliver good jobs, great public services and a safe climate for everyone.
Taking our democracy back from big business won’t be easy. But we have a plan to build our movement and win a Climate Jobs Guarantee that can solve the climate crisis and create good jobs for everyone who wants one.
