Response to the Federal Election
The progressive movement rallied across the east coast this weekend with a clear message for the Albanese government following the federal election: “No more excuses.”
“Two years ago, we helped eject the Morrison government and demanded Labor not squander the chance we’d fought for. Today, that demand is more urgent than ever,” said Des, National Director from Tomorrow Movement.
The rally follows growing frustration among progressive people who feel Labor’s cautious approach fails to meet the urgency of our multiple crises. While the recent election has seen Labor retain government despite the Coalition’s campaign tactics, Tomorrow Movement insists this isn’t a mandate for continued incrementalism.
“Albanese didn’t win because Australians loved Labor’s policies. Young voters didn’t rally behind Labor; we held our noses to keep the far right out,” said Des. “With the Liberals fractured, Labor has no more excuses for timidity.”
The Tomorrow Movement highlights several key areas where they believe Labor has failed to deliver transformative change:
- Climate Crisis: Despite climate emergency declarations, Labor continues approving new gas projects while global temperature records shatter monthly
- Housing Crisis: Young Australians face impossible rental markets and housing prices while property developers receive tax breaks
- Justice: Meaningful progress on Voice, Treaty and Truth remains stalled, and the Labor government has refused to sanction Israel
“We’re done being told to wait while our future is sold off to the highest bidder,” said Des. “With a majority government and the Coalition at a historic low, Labor faces a clear choice: Will they govern for the billionaires, or for the rest of us?”
The “No More Excuses” rally marks a significant shift in as organisations and community groups from across the progressive spectrum – from climate to youth to environment and Palestine – band together to hold Labor’s feet to the fire.
“After this federal election, we’re directly confronting Labor. We won’t be gaslit by calls for ‘moderation’ while the world burns,” said Des. “History will remember this moment. The question is whether Labor wants to be remembered as the government that finally acted – or the one that blew its last chance.”
